Understanding Preventive Visits: Clarifying the Differences

Introduction

Patients and healthcare professionals often use terms like preventive visit, initial preventive visit, annual well visit, and annual well woman visit interchangeably. However, each term refers to a distinct type of exam, each with its own specific codes, definitions, and coverage. This article aims to clear up the confusion surrounding these terms and provide clarity on what each visit entails.

Preventive Visits and Their Specifics

The types of preventive visits and their corresponding codes include:

  • Preventive Visit (CPT codes: 99381-99387, 99394-99397)
  • Initial Preventive Physical Exam (IPPE) (HCPC Code: G0402)
  • Annual Wellness Visit (AWV) (HCPC Codes: G0438, G0439)
  • Annual Well Woman Visit (HCPC code: G0101)

Definitions and Coverage

Key Differences and Documentation

A preventive visit (993XX) encompasses all elements of a well woman exam and more, but the codes 993XX and G0101 cannot be billed on the same day by the same provider. Ensuring documentation aligns with the examination conducted is crucial for accurate billing and patient care.

Education and Clarity

It’s beneficial to educate both patients and healthcare staff on the correct terminology for various types of preventive visits. Creating a clear, visible chart that displays the differences between preventive services can facilitate understanding and ensure that the correct terms are used.

Conclusion

Understanding the distinctions between different types of preventive visits is essential for both accurate documentation and optimal patient care. By providing clear definitions and components of each visit type, healthcare providers can improve communication and ensure that patients receive the appropriate care and services.
