CMS Responds to Change Healthcare Cyberattack: What Providers Need to Know
In response to the recent cyberattack on Change Healthcare, the Centers for Medicaid & Medicare Services (CMS) has announced significant flexibilities aimed at supporting healthcare providers during this challenging period. As a leading medical billing and coding company, Commit Services understands the critical importance of staying informed and prepared in times of crisis.
The cyberattack on Change Healthcare has disrupted healthcare operations nationwide, impacting hospitals, pharmacies, and healthcare providers across the country. CMS has taken proactive steps to mitigate the impact and ensure continuity of care for patients.
Key Measures Introduced by CMS:
Expedited Claims Processing: CMS is expediting claims processing to help providers continue serving patients without disruption. Providers facing difficulties in filing claims electronically can contact their Medicare Administrative Contractor (MAC) for assistance.
Flexibilities for Medicare Advantage and Part D Programs: Medicare Advantage (MA) organizations and Part D sponsors are encouraged to remove or relax prior authorization and utilization management requirements during system outages. CMS is also urging MA plans to offer advance funding to providers most affected by the cyberattack.
Encouragement for Medicaid and CHIP Managed Care Plans: Medicaid and CHIP managed care plans are encouraged to adopt similar flexibilities, including the removal or relaxation of prior authorization and utilization management requirements. Advance funding options for providers should be explored where permitted by the state.
Availability of Accelerated Payments: Providers experiencing cash flow challenges due to the cyberattack can explore accelerated payment options. CMS is working closely with MACs to facilitate individual consideration for accelerated payment requests.
CMS has also emphasized the importance of cybersecurity resilience across the healthcare ecosystem. In December 2023, HHS released a concept paper outlining the Department’s cybersecurity strategy for the healthcare sector. The strategy focuses on strengthening resilience, enhancing accountability, and promoting coordination to mitigate cyber threats effectively.
Commit Services recognizes the interconnectedness of the healthcare ecosystem and the urgency of bolstering cybersecurity measures. We urge all providers, technology vendors, and stakeholders to prioritize cybersecurity and take proactive steps to safeguard patient data and healthcare operations.
